Legendary Danish heavy metal guitarist Michael Denner (MERCYFUL FATE, KING DIAMOND) has launched a brand new band called DENNERS TRICKBAG. “It’s a project Denner started about six months ago,” the guitarist’s webmaster tells BLABBERMOUTH.NET. “First, he wanted to make some good music, with some of his best buddies, and with some he would enjoy beeing in a band in, and not someone from the metal scene he had already played with. He called the four musicians he had in mind” — including drummer Kim Hagemann (ZOSER MEZ, SWITCHBLADE) — “and they all said yes.”
DENNERS TRICKBAG‘s musical direction is “’70s progressive heavy metal with incredibly many guitar solos,” according to the webmaster. “Bands like JERICHO, CAPTAIN BEYOND, MONTROSE, THREE MEN ARMY and MOUNTAIN are, style-wise, what they aim for. ”
DENNERS TRICKBAG will play two exclusive shows at a small club in January 2013. An album release is planned for next spring.
KING DIAMOND & MERCYFUL FATE have issued the following:
Just in times for the holidays, “No Presents For Christmas” is being released on vinyl for the first time in over 25 years. It is being released exclusively through independent retail as part of Record Store Day’s Black Friday. For a store near you check out: http://www.recordstoreday.com/Venues
Legendary MERCYFUL FATE/KING DIAMOND guitarist Michael Denner is one of the guest musicians who will perform with Swedish multi-instrumentalist Snowy Shaw at a special Halloweeen concert event on November 3 at Sparbankshallen in Varberg, Sweden:
Snowy‘s backing band will be as follows:
* Mark U Black (M.A.N., ex-DREAM EVIL, KUNG DIAMANT) – Lead Guitar
* Petter Karlsson (ex-THERION, DIABLO SWING ORCHESTRA) – Drums
* Vikki Valkyrie (ex-ICE AGE, THEM SLUTS) – Bass
Snowy states: “Like last time around, I’m delighted and grateful to be joined on stage by some of the best friends from my former bands… and I’m looking forward to one helluva kick-ass performance with a specially designed Halloween theme that will make last year’s performance seem like a band practice by comparison.”
Shaw‘s live album, “Snowy Shaw Is Alive!”, was released last December via iTunes. The CD was recorded during his May 27, 2011 concert at the Brew House in Gothenburg, Sweden , which saw Snowy performing “all his favorite songs” from “all his former bands” — including KING DIAMOND, NOTRE DAME, DREAM EVIL, MERCYFUL FATE, THERION, MEMENTO MORI, ILLWILL, XXX and DIMMU BORGIR — and featured guest appearances by the following musicians:
* Andy La Rocque (KING DIAMOND, ILLWILL)
* Mike Wead (BIBLEBLACK, KING DIAMOND, MERCYFUL FATE)
* Hal Patino (KING DIAMOND)
* Mats Levén (THERION, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, TREAT, KRUX)
* Thomas Vikström (CANDLEMASS)
* Kee Marcello (EUROPE)
* Jackie Patino (a.k.a. Maryann Cotton)
Snowy‘s backing band consisted of the following players:
* Kristian Niemann (ex-THERION) – Lead Guitar
* Mannequin De Sade (ex-NOTRE DAME, ENGEL) – Drums
* Elvira – Bass
The “Snowy Shaw Is Alive!” artwork was created by Snowy Shaw, with illustration by Andrej Bartulovic.
Due to the “astonishing response” and many offers from festival promoters and booking agencies, Snowy has decided to postpone the release of the DVD version of the Brew House concert “with the intention of having even more material filmed and included from the upcoming shows ,” according to a press release.
This week marks the 30th Anniversary of the introduction of the compact disc. On October 1, 1982, Billy Joel‘s 52nd Street was released in Japan on CD. To play it, you had to buy a machine that cost $1000. But before long, CDs were the glorious new technology that changed the music industry forever, whether it was ever-increasing album running times (from somewhere in the 30-45 minute range to 70 minutes plus) or old records getting a new lease on life as they were reissued in the new format.
Mercyful Fate – Melissa original CD
So what were the first Roadrunner titles to appear on CD, you ask? Well, there were a few. According to former Executive VP Doug Keogh, “We pressed [King Diamond‘s] Abigail in the US, it was released June of ’87, and it was the first album released during my time at RR. However, we already had a few titles in the catalog – I believe it was Mercyful Fate‘s Melissa, Carnivore‘s Carnivore and Whiplash‘s Power and Pain. Those were the first titles released in the US by Roadrunner (actually Roadracer, but that’s another story), but of course Roadrunner in the Netherlands released albums prior to that.”
Mercyful Fate – Don’t Break the Oath original CD
Indeed, as former Roadrunner A&R guru Monte Conner points out, “RR Europe released [Mercyful Fate‘s] Don’t Break the Oath on CD – I have it. As well as Anvil and others. Just search ‘Roadrunner 1984’ or ‘Roadrunner 1985’ on eBay and you’ll see some of those original Euro CDs – which come in these weird jewel boxes.”
