Interview With MICHAEL SCHENKER: “Our next album release is planned for early 2017”

Guitar legend Michael Schenker has an impressive pedigree of a career with Scorpions, UFO, Michael Schenker Group and is showing no sign of slowing down yet, still going strong with Michael Schenker’s TEMPLE OF ROCK, who released their second album “Spirit On A Mission” in March 2015.

Prior to Michael setting off on the next leg of his TEMPLE OF ROCK “Spirit On A Mission World Tour” next month, (along with the established line up of Doogie White on vocals, Wayne Findlay on seven string guitar and keyboards, Francis Buchholz on bass and Herman Rarebell on drums) I had a great but brief chat with Michael about the forthcoming European tour, including the UK in January 2016, amongst other topics. A couple of excerpts can be read below and the full chat can be listened to on the audio player:

Discussing the band and their plans, Michael revealed:

“We start our European tour the 22nd October and we’re filming in Madrid on the 19th a new DVD and that will be released in early 2016. By around March it’ll be the end of our Spirit On A Mission World Tour, then we’ll be getting down to business and recording our third Temple Of Rock album and the release is planned for early 2017. We have also planned something very special for the UK tour, but it’s not confirmed yet.”

Michael updated me on his new Dean guitars:

“I’m actually having a double necked arriving, my latest thing. And I have a black and red guitar which is my latest six string model, so for now that’s the latest stuff out there, I love working with them (Dean). I actually love changing guitars around – it’s fun going from one guitar to another and keeping the stage presence a bit more cheerful and colourful, I’m very into it.

I have to make sure it works the way I envision it, but I should start using it on this tour on the 22nd.”

Award-winning, legendary guitarist Michael Schenker will embark on a 2016 nationwide UK tour at the starting at Bilston Robin on Wednesday January 20, 2016.

A 48-hour ticket pre-sale starts at 9am on Wednesday April 29, 2015 at www.planetrock.com. Tickets are available to the general public on Friday May 1 from the 24-Hour box office on 0844 478 0898 and thegigcartel.com.

Schenker will perform tracks from his current studio album Spirit On A Mission which features the singles Vigilante Man and Live and Let Live plus all the MSG, UFO and Scorpions rock classics.

The January 2016 UK tour will feature Schenker’s “Temple of Rock” band, comprising ex-Scorpions Herman Rarebell (drums) and Francis Buchholz (bass), Wayne Findlay (guitar, keyboards), and ex-Rainbow vocalist Doogie White.

Rich Davenport’s Rock Show this week features an extended interview with Graham Bonnet (RAINBOW, MSG, ALCATRAZZ), and is now available for streaming, below.

On this week’s show, you can hear the second of two interviews with former Rainbow vocalists to mark the release of the new Rainbow box set, “A Light In The Black 1975-1984”, as Graham Bonnet talks in depth about his time with Rainbow, his friendship with his predecessor in the band, Ronnie James Dio, his new solo band, Bonnet, and the release of his previously unissued debut solo album, originally recorded in 1975, but never released until now, as “Private I: The Archives Volume One”.

Graham also discusses his band’s forthcoming Japanese tour dates with Michael Schenker’s Temple of Rock, and you’ll hear a selection of tracks from the Rainbow box set, along with a song from “Private I: The Archives Volume One”.

Rich Davenport’s Rock Show this week features interviews with legendary guitar hero Michael Schenker, EUROPE’s Joey Tempest, Ricky Warwick (The Almighty, Black Star Riders) and Western Sand, and is now available for streaming below.

In the first hour, Michael Schenker discusses the new Temple of Rock album, “Spirit on a Mission”, and selects 3 tracks which reflect the record’s diversity. Michael also talks about the band’s touring plans for 2015, and confirms that he would like Temple of Rock to be seen as a band in its own right, like UFO or the Scorpions.

Also in the first hour, rising UK rockers Western Sand, who supported Michael Schenker’s Temple of Rock on their UK tour last December, talk about their new EP “Cut You Down To Size”, their touring plans, and their Southern Rock influences.

Part 2 kicks off with Europe’s Joey Tempest, who looks at the writing and recording of their new release “War of Kings”, which the band have described as the album they always wanted to make. Joey also chooses 2 songs from “War of Kings”

And The Almighty / Black Star Riders frontman Ricky Warwick shares his memories of the first two Almighty albums, “Blood Fire & Love” and “Soul Destruction”, both newly reissued in remastered form with bonus discs by Spinefarm Records. Ricky also chooses a pair of tracks from each album.

MICHAEL SCHENKER: Deaths Of DIO And MOORE Inspired His Work

Michael Schenker says the deaths of some of his musical heroes made him want to work in a band environment again, according to classicrock.com.

The guitar icon releases his third album with his Temple Of Rock project on March 23. Entitled “Spirit On A Mission”, the record features bassist Francis Buchholz, drummer Herman Rarebell, frontman Doogie White and keyboardist/guitarist Wayne Findlay.

RonnieJamesDioAfter years of operating as a solo artist, former Scorpions and UFO man Schenker says he was moved by the deaths of Gary Moore and Ronnie James Dio to go back to his rock band roots.

He tells Metalholic he got all of his experimentation out of his system in his years as a solo artist and realised he was ready to work as part of a band again.

He adds: “I’m going backwards, I’m going upside down. I was focusing on becoming a great guitarist and more of a solo thing. I got all my things out of my system, all the things I wanted to do. All the musical experiments, because no touring band would have wanted to do that.

“People are passing away, like Gary Moore, Ronnie James Dio, Johnny Winter and so many people. It’s gonna be just a memory, this incredible era that has lasted 50 years now.

The recording sessions for “Spirit On A Mission” were thrown into disarray last year when computers containing much of the recorded material were stolen from a studio in Germany.

But the songs are now ready to go and Schenker says he is thrilled with the results.

He says: “I’m very pleased with it, because I like the energy. I wanted to keep it very energetic and melodic and hard and then also even heavy. And I think we captured quite a bit of that.”

Award-winning, legendary rock guitarist Michael Schenker will release a new studio album entitled “Spirit On A Mission” in the UK on Monday 23rd March.

Released by in-akustik, the album of all-new material features Schenker’s Temple of Rock band including ex-Scorpions Herman Rarebell (drums) and Francis Buchholz (bass), ex-Rainbow’s Doogie White (vocals) and Wayne Findlay (guitar, keyboards). The album will be released on CD, Deluxe Edition (CD+DVD), Deluxe 180 gram vinyl (special DMM-Cut), and digital download.

The album features 12 classic rock guitar-driven songs that highlight Schenker’s distinctive and dynamic guitar playing, valiantly underpinned by the ferocious rhythm section of Rarebell and Buchholz, the same rhythm section that originally performed together on the Scorpions’ 1979 album Lovedrive.

Michael remembers how he came up with the name of the new album – “A while ago I was asked how I wanted to be remembered, and I said ‘as a spirit on a mission, spreading the joy of music from a place of pure self expression.’”   Check out the promo video of the new single “Vigilante Man” HERE.

Spirit On A Mission shows a re-energised guitarist at the top of his game, surrounded by some of the best musicians in rock.  The first single, “Vigilante Man”, is released Monday 19th January.
