MOTÖRHEAD, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, ALICE IN CHAINS, HIM, THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM and 30 SECONDS TO MARS are the latest additions to the UK’s Download Festival.
They join the previously announced SLIPKNOT who headline on Friday, June 14, IRON MAIDEN on Saturday, June 15th and RAMMSTEIN on Sunday, June 16th.
Lemmy Kilmister (MOTÖRHEAD) was one of the musicians who honored Chuck Berry at the 17th annual American Music Masters tribute concert on Saturday, October 27 at PlayhouseSquare’s State Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio.
Prior to the event, RockHall.com spoke to Lemmy about his impressions of rock and roll’s poet laureate. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
RockHall.com: Do you remember the first time you heard Chuck Berry‘s music?
Lemmy Kilmister: It was on a jukebox where I lived in North Wales, which is pretty desolate, so we didn’t get stuff like London did — there were no TV shows then with rock and roll on them, and there was no way to hear because the radio didn’t play it. You had to tune into Radio Luxembourg, which was in Luxembourg, in Europe, so that was very dodgy with the reception. You’d often find that a song would come on and you didn’t find out who played it until three weeks later — the fucking tuner would fade out. So, I first heard Berry on the jukebox, in the local cafe that we used to go to — I think it was “Sweet Little Sixteen”. I’m not sure. Would’ve been 13-14.
RockHall.com: It must’ve made quite an impression on a teen living in North Wales, no?
Lemmy: There were only two things to be then: you were either in or out. You were either straight or rock and roll. Some songs just spoke to you and some didn’t, and Berry‘s songs always did. We’d already heard Elvis and Little Richard and, I guess, Johnny Burnette — people like that filtered through. But [Berry] was the first one who really told stories.
RockHall.com: Berry had a way with words, a sense of humor, a certain economy of language…
Lemmy: Berry always had humor even though he was going through shit in his life. That was about the same time he went to jail for that bullshit charge involving a minor, which you wouldn’t have ever heard about if it were a white man. He always gave you all the details, even in the car songs, which were kind of state of the art — he’d give you all the makes of the cars, the things he was having done to them to make them fine. In just a few words, he’d lay it all out, and that was his great skill. He was the first one.
MOTÖRHEAD will enter the studio in January with longtime producer Cameron Webb to begin recording its next album for a mid-2013 release. “We’ll go into the rehearsal room about a month before the album and just band stuff out,” MOTÖRHEAD mainman Lemmy Kilmister tells Billboard.com.
In a recent interview with Artisan NewsMOTÖRHEAD drummer Mikkey Dee stated about the band’s plans for a new CD, “We have a lot of songs done already. It’s not finished. We’re gonna keep writing and we’ll record it next year, and it will come out next year.”
MOTÖRHEAD released “The Wörld Is Ours – Vol 2: Anyplace Crazy As Anywhere Else” in Germany on September 21, three days later in the rest of Europe and October 9 in North America via UDR/EMI. The follow-up to 2011’s “The Wörld Is Ours – Vol 1: Everywhere Further Than Everyplace Else” features the band’s 2011 Wacken Open Air headline appearance as well as highlights from Sonisphere (United Kingdom) and Rock In Rio (Brazil) shows.
MOTÖRHEAD‘s latest album, “The Wörld Is Yours”, sold 7,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 94 on The Billboard 200 chart. The band’s previous effort, “Motörizer”, premiered with 6,400 units back in 2008 to debut at No. 82, while 2006’s “Kiss Of Death” registered a first-week tally of 3,500.
MOTÖRHEAD‘s signature wine — which made its debut in Sweden in 2010 — has sold more than 300,000 bottles since it was launched.
The Australian Shiraz has been carefully selected by the hard rock legends and has been described as a wine with a fruity aroma, flavors of vanilla, blackberries, plums, eucalyptus and liquorice, but with soft rounded tannins. Or, as Lemmy Kilmister, lead singer, bass player and founder of the band, puts it: “My advice is — approach it with caution. I mean, wine is deceptive, anything can happen.”
The wine, which should be served slightly cooler than usual around 16-18 degrees, goes well with lamb or beef dishes, as well as pasta and flavoursome cheeses. The band recommends drinking it with grilled lamp chops with garlic and rosemary, while listening to anything by MOTÖRHEAD, from 1980’s “Ace Of Spades” to 2010’s universally acclaimed “The Wörld Is Yours” — denim and leather optional.
“The wine reflects MOTÖRHEAD‘s spirit. Like the band, this wine is rock hard on the outside, but dark and intriguing on the inside,” says MOTÖRHEAD drummer Mikkey Dee.
The initiative for Motörhead Shiraz came from Bevarages Per Minute Sweden who contacted the band with the idea. Grapes Svenska AB was commissioned to produce it.
When asked how the idea for Motörhead Shiraz came about, Lemmy said in a recent interview, “Well, the company takes care of the business end and all I have to worry about is the quality. I am not going to sell shit to people, you know. We have a wine as well, that is very good. It was really simple how I got into it. This guy came up and said, ‘You know, you could make money if we make this wine.’ I said, ‘Okay.’ I think it is a California wine or it might be Spanish, I don’t know. The vodka is Swedish.”
Legendary MOTÖRHEAD mainman Lemmy Kilmister spoke with Jeb Wright from Classic Rock Revisited recently about a number of topics including their new live set, The Wörld Is Ours – Vol 2: Anyplace Crazy As Anywhere Else.
A few excerpts from the chat follow:
Classic Rock Revisited: The Wacken Festival looks amazing on the DVD. Tell me what is unique about Wacken?
Lemmy: “It is one of the oldest festivals in Germany; it’s been around a long time. We played there early on when it was only one day and now it is four or five days. There were only a few thousand people in the old days and now it’s 85,000. I’ve got a plaque from them for Motörhead being the band that has played Wacken the most times.”
Classic Rock Revisited: : You don’t depend on the lights or the showmanship. Did record companies ever try to get you to be more gimmicky on stage?
Lemmy: “No, we can’t afford to do that in America, anyway. If you’re third on the bill you don’t get to do that. If it is one of our own shows then we play at smaller places, so there isn’t room for a lot of that stuff. We found ourselves having to stand on the music alone, which we have done so far.”
Classic Rock Revisited: : When you play big festivals there are Metal bands from different generations. Some of the new bands are more about the show than the music.
Lemmy: “That’s because people applaud pyro. That encourages bands to do that. It seems someone is always wanting to light a match. The girls breathing fire is different because they have tits and things. Most of our audience is boys, so it is a bit of a treat for the guys. They’ve been standing there all day, very often in the rain, especially in Europe. It is just a bit of a treat.”
Classic Rock Revisited: : There are rumors that the next Motörhead album will be all covers.
Lemmy: “We did discuss it, but we haven’t come to a concrete decision on it. It would be fun to do. The three of us are very different when it comes to music, so it would be a very diverse album. We’d make them all into Motörhead songs, anyway. We’ve done covers before.”
MOTÖRHEAD will release “The Wörld Is Ours – Vol 2: Anyplace Crazy As Anywhere Else” in North America on October 22 via UDR/EMI. “The Wörld Is Ours – Vol 2: Anyplace Crazy As Anywhere Else” will be available as a digipack (DVD plus two CDs), double-CD, double-vinyl (Wacken Open Air show), Blu-ray and direct-to-consumer version featuring 2 CDs, a DVD/Blu-ray and a special booklet.
