On September 7th, the former GUNS N’ ROSES guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal performed Paul McCartney, IRON MAIDEN, KISS and GUNS N’ ROSES classics on his solo acoustic concert at the Twice Café in Shinsaibashi, Osaka, Japan.
THE BEATLES‘ iconic ballad “Yesterday” is one of most covered songs in music history – but even Paul McCartney would tip his hat to Anthony Kulkamp Dias, the 33-year-old Brazilian bank worker who strummed out the Help! anthem while undergoing a brain-tumor–removal surgery, reports RollingStones.com. “I played six songs at certain times,” Dias told Brazilian news site G1 (via Telegraph). “My right hand was a bit weaker because that was the side that they were operating on. So I stopped and rested. I was interspersing songs and talking with them.”
He drowsily croons and strums out simplified chords to “Yesterday” – which Rolling Stone ranked the 13th greatest song of all-time – in the above clip, resting an acoustic guitar on his stomach as the surgeons perform their complicated task. Dias, a professional musician for two decades, performed an array of material, including a song (“Emanuel”) that he wrote for his newborn son. Not only was the music not a distraction for the surgery team – they even issued requests. “The doctors asked me to repeat one of the country songs, so I even had an encore,” the musician told G1.
Dias underwent innovative surgery that allowed doctors to safely map the awake patient’s brain – a technique that helps prevent injuries during the operation. “By keeping [him] awake during surgery, these areas can be monitored in real time,” said Dr. Jean Abreu Machado, clinical director for Nossa Senhora da Conceição hospital. “It really is a great challenge for the whole surgery team, including the anesthetist.”
The patient was scheduled to be discharged on Wednesday – armed with his health, an incredible viral video and lifetime bragging rights.

PAUL MCCARTNEY performed with surviving NIRVANA members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear last night (Wednesday, December 12th) at Hurricane Sandy charity concert 121212, at Madison Square Garden in New York City
The quartet performed the new track, ‘Cut Me Some Slack’, and introducing the song McCartney stated: “So recently some guys asked me to go and jam with them. So I showed up, like you do, ready to jam… and in the middle of it, these guys kept saying, ‘You know, well, we haven’t played together for years, you know?’ So, the penny finally dropped, I finally understood that I was in the middle of a Nirvana reunion.”
Check out the performance below:
It was previously reported that McCartney had been secretly working in the studio with Grohl and Novoselic, who formed the main line-up of the iconic grunge band Nirvana, along with singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain who committed suicide in 1994.
The 70-year-old said he received a phone call from Grohl, asking him to come and ‘jam with some mates’.
He found himself playing alongside Novoselic and unofficial fourth Nirvana member Pat Smear, but confessed: ‘I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said “Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?”
‘And somebody whispered to me “That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.” I couldn’t believe it.’
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alice Cooper, HEART, ELO‘s Jeff Lynne and Steve Miller have been added to the list of artists contributing songs to Paul McCartney tribute album, featuring covers of classic compositions from Sir Paul‘s catalog with THE BEATLES and WINGS and from his solo career.
KISS and THE CURE was previously announced to be part of the tribute, which has yet to partner with a label or distributor, but is being curated by longtime producer and music supervisor Ralph Sall (“Clueless”, “10 Things I Hate About You”, “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”).
