Norwegian Black Metal veterans RAGNAROK are streaming their upcoming eighth full-length album “Psychopathology” in its entirety ahead of its release on the 25th March. The album, which is being streamed exclusively by Terrorizer magazine can be heard at http://www.terrorizer.com/news/ragnarok-stream-new-album-psychopathology
RAGNAROK guitarist Bolverk had this to say about the album:
“The new Ragnarok album follows in the footsteps of its predecessor ‘Malediction’. A mix of old Ragnarok and newer inspiration. The title of the album is ‘Psychopathology’, a term which in short means to dissect someone’s mind. A couple of lines of text from the title track are: “I’m inside your mind. I dissect your soul,” and one of the points of the lyrics is that sometimes the cure is worse than the disease. This is by no means a concept album, but most of the lyrics can be associated with madness or deviation in some form or another. To make it very brief: ‘Dominance and Submission’ is about sadomasochism. ‘The Eighth of the Seven Plagues’ and ‘Heretic’ are about religion. ‘Where Dreams go to Die’ is about madness. ‘Lies’ and ‘I Hate’ are pretty self-explanatory. ‘Into the Abyss’ is about the dark path that most of us are on. ‘Infernal Majesty’ is a tribute to our master. ‘Blood’ is about sacrifice. ‘My Creator’ has some very personal lyrics written by Jontho, while the other lyrics are written by (myself) Bolverk”.
The eleven-track album was recorded at the Endarker Studio in Sweden with MARDUK bassist Devo at the helm and is the first time that founder Jontho, one of Norwegian Black Metal’s most recognizable drummers, is not to be found behind the drumkit. In a surprise announcement last year, Jontho took up the mantle of frontman, and relinquished his drummer role to DAUDEN’s Malignant . On guitars is RAGNAROK stalwart Bolverk, whilst bassist DezeptiCunt makes his final appearance with the band.

Norway’s RAGNAROK, a band that has been active for over twenty years on the Black Metal scene, have completed work on their eighth full-length album, which is set to be released in early 2016 on Agonia Records. Recorded, mixed and mastered at the Endarker Studio in Sweden by MARDUK’s Devo, the album will be titled “Psychopathology”.
Founder and frontman Jontho had this to say about fans can expect from it: “Your wait will finally come to an end in 2016 when we release “Psychopathology”, our eighth full-length album. I can say with absolute certainty that this album will be the best in RAGNAROK’s career to date. It is the result of dedication, hard work, and the musical skills of our lineup, and is the next stage in the band’s development, both musically and lyrically. “Psychopathology” is about to unleash total chaos upon you as it invites you to dive deeper into the dark recesses of the human mind”.
This will be the first album in RAGNAROK‘s history that doesn’t feature founder Jontho on drums. Having taken over the role of frontman, his place behind the drum kit is taken by DAUDEN drummer Malignant, who joined the band in 2014. Bolverk, is on guitars, and DezeptiCunt makes his swansong appearance with the band on bass as he leaves to concentrate on new projects.
Commenting about the band’s future plans and DezeptiCunt’s departure, Jontho said: ” Shortly after completing the recording of our latest album, our bass player DezeptiCunt informed us that he would be leaving the band to concentrate on a new project. As a recording and touring band, RAGNAROK requires 100% commitment from its members and at this point neither he nor RAGNAROK felt that he would be able to give both bands that necessary commitment. We would like to thank him for the eight years he was with us and wish him all the best for the future.
“Going forward we will be concentrating all our energies on promoting the new album, and plan to take our time choosing the right bass player to take his place, so in the meantime we will be using a session musician for the upcoming live shows”.
DezeptiCunt himself explained ” I have had eight good years with RAGNAROK, both in the studio and live, but the time has come, as indeed it does for many musicians, to move on and explore new avenues. I know it might seem strange that I announced my departure from the band just as they are about to release their new album, but the opportunity came up for me to join a brand new project whose music I liked immediately, and whose ideas greatly appealed to me, and of course, being able to join them right at the start just as they begin rehearsals to take the band live was something I very much wanted to be a part of.
“At the same time I felt that I wouldn’t be able to give 100% of my attention to each of the two demanding projects, and therefore I decided that it would be fairer for all concerned if I was to cut my ties with RAGNAROK straight away, so that they can move forward without any uncertainty. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to wish RAGNAROK all the best for the future, and much success for the new album”.
RAGNAROK’s next confirmed live appearances are at Sequane Fest VIII in France in March and Steelfest Open Air in Finland in May.
It has been several months since one of Norway’s iconic Black Metal bands RAGNAROK announced the departure of vocalist Hans Fyrste, and since then there has been much speculation as to who will replace him, with several high profile names being thrown into the mix by fans. But until now the band has kept quiet about their choice, whilst at the same time rehearsing the new lineup behind closed doors. And now that the announcement can be made, there is no doubt at all that it will surprise most fans – because the new vocalist will be drummer and RAGNAROK founder Jontho himself, and his place behind the drum kit on stage will be taken by DAUDEN drummer Malignant.
It might seem strange that Jontho, who is one of the most well known and respected drummers on the Black Metal scene, and who has played in various bands such as TSJUDER , ENDEZZMA and SHADOW DANCERS during his long and formidable career, should decide on a change of direction, especially with a band that he founded 20 years ago, but, as he explains, he is not entirely abandoning his drums:
“When Hans Fyrste left I sat down together with bass player DezeptiCunt and guitarist Bolverk, and we knew that finding the right person who would fit RAGNAROK’s ethos both in terms of performance and live appearances was not going to be easy. On top of which we had to begin work on our eighth full-length album, and we didn’t want to have to rush into anything we might later come to regret, so we took the decision that I would continue to handle the drums in the studio, as well as taking on the vocals both in the studio and on stage, and that Malignant would drum for us live on stage. Although I’m known as a drummer, I’m not a stranger to performing vocals, having done backing vocals on some of RAGNAROK’s albums. It would be fair to say that am tired of front men who do not give their all and quit the band, so, since I am the most stable member and the de facto front man from the beginning, even though I played the drums, I will now front the band as I should have years ago. Of course, doing vocals live in front of an audience is definitely a challenge, but one that I was interested in trying after all these years behind the drum kit. Will I continue as RAGNAROK’s vocalist after the release of the next album? That remains to be seen, but for the time being it’s something I’m looking forward to”.
Jontho’s first appearance on stage as vocalist with RAGNAROK will take place on the 4th of October at the Stadthalle in Schweinfurt, Germany, when the band is set to appear at Norwegian Hellcamp, the new festival which, as its name suggests, is devoted entirely to Norwegian Black and Extreme Metal. Along with RAGNAROK in the lineup are TAAKE, SLAGMAUR, VULTURE INDUSTRIES, ENDEZZMA, SARKOM, DEN SAAKALDTE and AURA NOIR. Aside from working on their next album, RAGNAROK are also currently in the middle of planning some South American dates later this year. More information about RAGNAROK can be found on the band’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/ragnarokofficial
