Tuesday May 29th, RALPH SANTOLLA – former guitarist of Death, Iced Earth, Deicide, Obituary etc. – suffered a heart attack and since then he was in a coma at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Florida, surrounded day and night by his family and closest friends. Late last night (Wednesday June 6th) Ralph was taken off assisted living.
Early this morning, Bill Hudson, one of Ralph’s closest friends, posted via his Facebook page the following message:
“I (and many others) just lost my best friend, as well as one of the most underrated guitarists in all history. He passed away peacefully surrounded by about 10 of his closest friends and family (myself included). Please keep his mother Sue Santolla-Rocha, his son Dorian Angelo Santolla and all the rest of us in your thoughts…
Rest In Peace, my brother Ralph… You will be missed by A LOT of people…
I love you bro”
Sue Santolla-Rocha, Ralph’s mother revealed some days ago, that “Ralph is an organ donor so he will live on. Those recipients don’t know what they are getting until they suddenly become sarcastic, funny, get tattoos, start playing guitar. One other thing, Devil’s Highway was getting close to completion. It will be done and that is Ralph’s legacy.“
Now you’re free and at peace, Ralph! … R.I.P., you will be greatly missed!
Our condolences to Ralph’s family and his closest friends!

Earlier today we got worrying news about RALPH SANTOLLA, former guitarist of Death, Iced Earth, Deicide, Obituary etc., that he suffered a heart attack on Tuesday night, and is now in a coma at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Florida.
Sue Santolla-Rocha, Ralph’s mother, has posted via her Facebook page the following update, 6 hours ago:
“Friend and family..it is out there now so let me tell you what I know. Ralph thought he had a spider bite on Saturday. Went to the hospital. It was not a spider bite, it was a blood clot. Tuesday nite he fell and he had a heart attack. John Rocha gave him CPR until EMT arrive. His heart had stopped but they got him back. His visuals are staple but he is in a coma. He is on a ventilator but he is breathing around it he could breathe on his own but they do not want to had additional strain to his body. He is in a coma. That is the main concern at this moment. They can fix everything else. We are having as many of his friends as he can come and talk to him and play music. There has been a minimal movement but some. It is ICU but he is in a private room and they are letting anyone in and they can stay as long as they want. So please pray as he has people all over the world praying and if you can come and spend time with him. Please..he needs to get back from the place that he is in. I love you all…let’s just work on getting him out of the coma if we can. I will keep everyone update the best I can st Joseph hospital. Van dyke rd Tampa”
Our thoughts and good vibes are there with you, Ralph, don’t give up! \m/
