ENSLAVED ‘S Ivar Bjørnson To Curate Roadburn Festival

Roadburn Festival ENSLAVEDENSLAVED guitarist Ivar Bjørnson has been announced as one of the curators of Roadburn Festival 2015 alongside WARDRUNA‘s Einar Kvitrafn Selvik. As curators, both Ivar and Einar will personally select the bands for their curated Roadburn event, named ‘Houses of the Holistic’, and play special shows with ENSLAVED and WARDRUNA respectively as well.

The Norwegian pair, both former Roadburn performers, have played an important role in bringing together the past, present and future sounds of hard rock, progressive metal, and alternative scenes, which makes them the ideal choice to carry on the tradition that began in 2008.

One of the most hard-hitting and progressive bands to come out of Norway, ENSLAVED has drawn other musical genres and artistic expressions into the realm of metal, while being recognized for merging tradition and modernity in a unique blend of rock, prog and black metal, earning them Spellemann Awards (Norwegian Grammys) for much acclaimed and groundbreaking albums such as “Isa” (2004), “Ruun” (2006), and “Vertebrae” (2008) among others.

ENSLAVED ‘s performance, dubbed ‘House of Northern Gods’, will consist of a set list specially put together for ‘Houses of the Holistic’, featuring songs from the band’s entire catalogue that embody the Norse gods, with accompanying visuals created by revered Romanian artist, Costin Chioreanu. Be prepared for a surprise or two, or even more.

Ivar Bjørnson comments: “To say that my dream as a kid was to one day curate the Roadburn Festival would perhaps be to take it a tad too far – but it isn’t that far from the truth. There’s some ridiculously big shoes to fill, but luckily negative pressure, idea draught and performance anxiety aren’t something I’m into. It is my favourite festival in one of my favourite parts of the world; so this is nothing short of one the biggest honours I’ve been given! It is a privilege to undertake this challenge in twosome with Einar; an artist I truly feel in tune with artistically and philosophically – now it is all about hard work and dedication to ensure that the audience and the festival itself is given a Friday to enjoy, experience and remember. I for one can’t wait!”

 Roadburn Festival 2015 will run for four days from Thursday, April 9 to Sunday, April 12, 2015 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands. ‘Houses of the Holistic’, co-curated by Ivar Bjørnson will take place on Friday, April 10, 2015.

 ENSLAVED ‘s most current album “RIITIIR” was released on September 28, 2012 via Nuclear Blast.

TRIPTYKON: Returns To Roadburn

In 2010, the organizers of Holland’s highly acclaimed Roadburn Festival invited Tom Gabriel Warrior, founder of Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, and Triptykon, to act as the curator at that year’s festival. Under the banner of Only Death Is Real, Roadburn 2010 thus became the venue for the presentation of Triptykon‘s newly-released debut album, Eparistera Daimones, as well as Triptykon’s first official life appearance. We felt very honoured by the confidence Roadburn placed in us, and the event will forever rank as one of the most significant experiences in the existence of Triptykon.

We are therefore deeply delighted and proud to be able to announce that Triptykon has been asked to return to Roadburn in 2014. To commemorate the release of Triptykon‘s long-awaited new album in spring 2014, Triptykon will appear on Roadburn‘s main stage at the 013 venue, on Sunday, April 13, 2014.

Tom Gabriel Warrior: Roadburn is very likely the most extraordinary, daring, and vigorous festival in what has otherwise largely become a blandly repetitive and overly commercialized heavy rock scene. Moreover, anybody who has ever attended Roadburn can confirm that no other festival exudes such a unique feeling of radiance and creativity among audience and performers alike. Triptykon’s return to Roadburn in 2014 signifies yet another truly unique chapter in a long affiliation with the festival, dating back to the riotous days of Celtic Frost. I am deeply grateful to Roadburn’s artistic director Walter Hoeijmakers for his extraordinary friendship and his continued faith in the path we are pursuing with Triptykon. In return, we shall duly transform Roadburn into a church of darkness.

OPETH’s Mikael Åkerfeldt To Curate 2014 Roadburn Festival

We’re elated to announce that Mikael Åkerfeldt has agreed to curate Roadburn Festival 2014 on Friday, April 11th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands. As curator, Mikael will personally select the bands for his special event, and play a headline show with Opeth, too!

Musically, Mikael has consistently pushed the boundaries. Over the last two decades, he guided Opeth’s evolution, drawing the band out from under the doom-laden shade of occult-infused Scandinavian death metal and into a place in the sun as revered progressive rock / metal innovators, never once sacrificing the authentic spirit of previous artistic endeavours.

Mikael’s steadfast devotion to aesthetic progression and perfection has proven ground-breaking and highly influential for an entire new generation of musicians practicing the art of progressive rock and psychedelica. At the same time, he has steadfastly honoured the mystical pioneers of late 1960s and early 1970s psychedelic folk, rock and prog — some of Opeth’s albums are named after obscure psychedelic prog outfits or song titles — all of which is in perfect sync with Roadburn Festival.

Opeth’s body of work is highly respected by Roadburn audiences, which makes Mikael the ideal choice to carry on the tradition that began in 2008 with David Tibet / Current 93, and continued with Neurosis, Tom G Warrior, Sunn 0))), Voivod and Jus Oborn / Electric Wizard.

“I’ve reached out to a handful of my favourite bands from the past and present. As of now it looks like it will be an amazing musical event. Still brainstorming about possible bands for this glorious festival but I already know that I’m going to be like a kid at Christmas. It will be amazing! Plain and simple. Obviously Opeth will perform as well, but to be quite honest with you, our own performance doesn’t get me nearly as excited as the thought of experiencing the bands that have shown interest. Circle To Perform At Next Year’s Roadburn Festival

Finland’s west coast rock and metal band Circle will be “artists-in-residence” at next year’s edition of the Roadburn Festival, set to take place April 14-16, 2011 at the Midi Theatre in Tilburg, Holland.

Circle and side project Pharaoh Overlord will be bringing their relentless riffs and genre-destroying musical virtuosity back to Roadburn for the first time since 2007. Circle will be drawing from their enormous (33+ full length records!) discography to play two completely different sets from their 2010 European tour.

With their style ranging from psychedelic rock to free jazz, with literally dozens of other genres between, they has been one of the most diverse musical groups of our time, and if there was ever a band designed to play multiple sets at a festival, it would be Circle. Not only do they have literally hundreds of songs to choose from, but they are also extremely creative and capable of musically changing styles and sounds at the drop of a studded leather hat. Add in their bizarre-but-consummate showmanship, and you have a compelling recipe for
maximum entertainment.

Circle spin-off band Pharaoh Overlord will be playing for one set as well, and anyone who saw them in 2007 knows that it will be something quite unforgettable. They take stoner rock and deconstruct it to it’s most minimal form, The Riff, resulting in music that is akin to well-muscled instrumental kraut rock. Combining their deliberate heaviness with a unique on-stage delivery, they induce a psychotropic stoner-sufi trance that is as much a riff worship ritual as it is a musical performance. After a 4-year recording hiatus, they have recently released their new album, Siluurikaudella.
