Ahead of their upcoming Rock ‘N India headline performance, Tom Araya from US thrash legends SLAYER spoke with Debarun Borthakur from Sevensisters Post about the show being held on October 20th in Bangalore among other topics. Here are a few excerpts:
On Slayer’s use of controversial topics: “Man is pretty evil. Nazism and Satanism reflect Man’s dark nature and extreme religious beliefs, good and evil. Kerry (guitarist Kerry King) writes all the anti-religious songs. He considers himself an atheist. But Slayer as a band does not preach.”
On aging: “We have maintained our signature intensity, which is the heavy and fast. Age, huh? Slayer has lived up to its signature intense music and crazy lyrics for the last 30 years with every new album that we come out with.”
On their 12th studio album: “We are working on a new album, aiming for a 2013 release. We are experimenting with a lot of sounds. What we can tell you is that the new album will be very Slayer.”
Global rock royalty from such bands as IRON MAIDEN, SLIPKNOT, WHITESNAKE, CHICKENFOOT, THE CULT, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, DEEP PURPLE, JUDAS PRIEST, SLAYER and BLACK SABBATH took part in last night’s (Saturday, September 22) Marshall 50th-anniversary event at Wembley Arena in London, England. The luminaries celebrated the life and work of revolutionary amp pioneer Jim Marshall with an unparalleled display of rock virtuosity.
Following the sad news of Jim‘s death in April, the event, which was already planned to commemorate Marshall‘s 50th anniversary, was ultimately held in honor of the legendary man and his remarkable life.
IRON MAIDEN‘s Nicko McBrain compèred the event and was joined by the world’s most legendary guitarists, acclaimed musicians and Marshall enthusiasts.

Marshall died in April at the age of 88. A message posted at the web site of Marshall Amplification, the company he founded 50 years ago, stated, “Jim‘s ascent into the history books as ‘the Father of Loud’ and the man responsible for ‘the Sound of Rock’ is a true rags-to-riches tale. Cruelly robbed of his youth by tubercular bones, Jim rose to become one of the four forefathers responsible for creating the tools that allowed rock guitar as we know and love it today to be born. The groundbreaking quartet also included the late, great trio of Leo Fender, Les Paul and Seth Lover — together with Jim, they truly are the cornerstones of all things rock.”
The site described Marshall as “a legendary man who led a full and truly remarkable life.”
The cause of Marshall‘s death was not announced.
A former singer, drummer and music shop owner, Marshall eventually landed a job as an electrical engineer that helped him design a transportable amplifier to use at his own live shows. Consulting with musicians like THE WHO‘s Pete Townshend and DEEP PURPLE‘s Ritchie Blackmore, Marshall refined his invention and opened Marshall Amplification in 1962.
By the mid-1960s, he had created the classic Marshall Stack, consisting of one head containing the actual amplifier, on top of two stacked loudspeaker cabinets each containing four 12-inch loudspeakers arranged in a square layout. The setup has become an iconic symbol of rock music played as loud as possible.

SLAYER guitarist Kerry King and the rest of the Metal Masters react to the ESPN promo with John Clayton as a Slayer fan who lives at home with his mom. King says it’s “awesome!”
John Clayton is a senior NFL writer and commentator who joined ESPN in 1995. He is also a member of the writers’ wing of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
Three of the leading gear/technology companies for both musicians and consumers alike returned with their successful “Metal Masters” clinic series. Partnering up with Guitar Center, “Metal Masters 4” took place earlier last night (Friday, September 7) at the Gramercy Theater in New York City .
“Metal Masters 4” brought back some of the classic “masters” while adding a few new members to the list. Tonight’s main band comprised of Philip Anselmo (DOWN, ex-PANTERA), Kerry King (SLAYER), Dave Lombardo (SLAYER), Scott Ian (ANTHRAX), Charlie Benante (ANTHRAX), Frank Bello (ANTHRAX) and newly added masters Billy Sheehan (MR. BIG, DAVID LEE ROTH) and Gary Holt (EXODUS, SLAYER).
The following songs were performed:
* “Room For One More” (w/ Frank Bello on lead vocals) (ANTHRAX)
* “Mouth For War” (PANTERA)
* “Five Minutes Alone” (PANTERA)
* “A New Level” (PANTERA)
* “Chemical Warfare” (SLAYER)
* “War Ensemble” (SLAYER)
* “Goddamn Electric” (PANTERA)
* “Sergeant D & The S.O.D.” (STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH)
* “Kill Yourself” (STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH)
* “Angel Of Death” (SLAYER)
* “Strike Of The Beast” (EXODUS)
* “Raining Blood” (SLAYER)
* “Fucking Hostile” (PANTERA)
Speaking to Artisan News earlier this summer, King stated about tonight’s “Metal Masters” event, “The reason I still do it to this day is to get Phil involved, because I think the world misses him. He’s good at what he does and I’m one of the few guys he looks up to to the point where he’d come out and do it. And I’m not blowing sunshine up my ass; it’s just a fact. And everybody wants to see Phil. Everybody loves Phil. When I come out, it’s a huge applause. When Phil comes out, it’s like somebody came back from the dead; they’re not expecting it. And it’s cool.”
Sweden Rock Magazine correspondent Daniela Pilic has posted a one-minute video overview of SLAYER‘s recently released Sweden-exclusive red wine. Check it out below. The name of the wine, “Reign In Blood”, is taken from the band’s classic album, which came out in 1986.
“Reign In Blood” was released by the start-up company Brands For Fans.
According to Brands For Fans founder Sari H Wilholm, the response to the wine has been astounding. If the wine is successful, she hopes to export it to other countries.
“The demand has been enormous; we never expected it to be quite like this,” she said.
Asked why it was a good idea to launch a SLAYER wine, Wilholm told Dagens Media, “I think people understand that SLAYER would never attach their name to anything without having been involved throughout the process and having personally tried and approved the product. That kind of commitment, I think, is different from other artists who release similar items.”
The wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon from California, is as uncomprimising and tough as the band. After a couple of Seasons in the Abyss, the wine has an undisputed attitude and a soft nose of dark berry fruits with oak and spicy nuances. Good mouth feel with hints of fresh fruit and juicy, smooth tannins. Well structured and rounded with subtle notes of oak, showing true Divine Intervention. Enjoy it while headbanging, riffing or with food, friends and great music. Reign in Wine!

California thrash metal legends SLAYER have spent the last year and half touring without guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who is still recovering from necrotising fasciitis, a flesh-eating disease, which he is believed to have gotten from a spider bite. At last year’s “Big Four” concert in Indio, California, Hanneman joined the band onstage for a two-song encore, but he hasn’t yet been able to tour again.
Asked if Jeff‘s absence has delayed the recording process for SLAYER‘s new album, the band’s other guitarist, Kerry King, told Artisan News (see video below), “Not yet. We’ve recorded very little. We got a little bit done. We had a 12-day window where we hijacked [producer] Greg Fidelman from METALLICA and worked with him a little bit. So we’ve got two [new songs] done; they’ve gotta be mixed. We’ve got two other ones that need vocals and leads. [There are] three other demos and three other [tracks] we still have to demo. But [this summer’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour] is the last thing we’re doing, so hopefully we’ll get [the rest of the album] done before we pick up and tour again in October.”
Hanneman did not take part in the recent recording sessions, but his absence did not affect the new labum’s scheduling since King typically records all the basic guitar parts himself.
Regarding whether he ever thought one of his bandmates would get sidelined by such a rare condition, King said, “You hear about it, but I didn’t even think we had that kind of spider in California. And I really think at the end of the day it’s a speculation, because his arm was so fucked up, I can’t imagine them even finding where they think it started, if you had my opinion. But, you know, that flesh-eating stuff, you can get scratched by a nail, you can get scratched by anything, and if you don’t take care of it, it’s gonna turn into something like that. But whatever got him, that is what happened — he had had the disease.”
Hanneman is being temporarily replaced on the road by EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt, who has been described by King as “the Glenn Tipton of our era — really good, really polished and nobody talks about him. To this day, nobody really references [JUDAS] PRIEST and Tipton that much as guitar players and I feel the same way about Gary. EXODUS have a huge following but a little more overlooked than METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER, ANTHRAX — the ‘Big Four,’ so to speak, so [it’s great] to be able to bring him to the forefront and shove him down people’s throats and say, ‘Hey, this motherfucker kicks ass. Pay attention.'”
