Thobbe Englund on His Return to Sabaton: “The Best Thing That’s Ever Happened To Me!”

Thobbe Englund, who returned to Sabaton on February 9 of last year after eight years and reclaimed the guitarist position from Tommy Johansson, spoke last week with the Brazilian YouTube channel Porque! Metal about his comeback and how it all happened.

Englund first explained that he had always kept in touch with the band since his departure in 2016: “We even wrote some songs together, and we always made sure to stay in touch, barbecuing, having beers, visiting each other’s family and stuff like that.”

When the request came almost ten years later to rejoin, it was the perfect fit for Englund: “It was the perfect timing for me,” he says. because when he originally left, he was tired and burnt out, “I wanted to slow down a bit, and focus a little bit on my own music and stuff like that, but also have a kid, buy a house, and all that.”

The decision to return was ultimately “a no-brainer” for him. It felt like a “full-circle moment.” Englund says: “This is the  best [thing] that could ever happen”. “I belong to Sabaton. That’s my family, that’s my best friends.” When his return was confirmed, the band fellt like “[giddy] school girls.”

The other Sabaton members had also expressed their excitement about Englund’s return when the announcement was made last year.

Pär Sundström: “This is a full circle moment for Sabaton and we are beyond excited to have Thobbe rejoin the band. He’s a talented guitarist, songwriter and a kind guy who we have a lot of fun with. We didn’t even need to hold auditions with other guitar players. All that was needed was to spend New Year’s Eve together to know that the time was right for Thobbe´s return.”

Joakim Brodén: “This decision was a no-brainer for us as a band and for Thobbe. He knows the drill and is the perfect fit. This is a great outcome, and we think everyone is going to be psyched about the news! The time is right. Welcome back brother!”

Hannes Van Dahl: “Who? Thobbe f***ng Englund, that’s who! The man is back! I’m happy to once again share the stage with one of my best friends! Welcome back brother!”

Chris Rörland: “I’m beyond excited and happy for the return of the king! We’ve had so many good times together, both on stage and off stage. It’s gonna be great to share the stage again. Welcome back and welcome home my brother! Love ya!”

“Templars”: Englund’s First Single Since 2016

At the end of April, it was finally time for Englund’s musical comeback:  Sabaton released “Templars,” the first single featuring him on guitar since the 2016 album The Last Stand. According to rumors, “Templars” also marks the beginning of a new album – though nothing has been officially confirmed yet. Until then, it’s a matter of waiting patiently and enjoying the new song.

BLOODBOUND And CRYSTAL VIPER to Join Forces on “Dragons and Witches Tour”

Polish heavy metal act CRYSTAL VIPER will join forces with the Swedish power metallers BLOODBOUND, and will hit the road in March and April 2017. The DRAGONS AND WITCHES TOUR line up will be completed by the new band of THOBBE ENGLUND (the ex-SABATON guitar shredder, who promotes his new studio album “Sold My Soul”), and the support act, which will be announced.

BLOODBOUND will be promoting their brand new studio album entitled “War Of Dragons”, which will be released on February 24. CRYSTAL VIPER is coming back after 4-year long hiatus, with a brand new album entitled “Queen Of The Witches”, which will be released on February 17. Both albums will be released by AFM Records, and will be available as CD, limited edition LP and digital download.

SABATON: Present New Guitarist; More Tour Dates Announced

Swedish heavy metal heroes, SABATON, closed the release weekend of their new record entitled “The Last Stand”, successfully at their own festival, Sabaton Open Air. They not only had to say goodbye to their guitarist Thobbe Englund, but they also welcomed their new member Tommy Johansson.

Our guitarplayer Thobbe did his final concert with us on last Saturday’s very emotional show at the Sabaton Open Air festival. Celebrating the release of our new album while saying goodbye to a great friend is lots of mixed feelings. But the future is bright since this was not nearly our last stand, from now on you will see Tommy Johansson playing guitars with SABATON and we all look forward to see you on the road!”

Tommy added:
“For me to be a part of the SABATON family is a huge honour and I couldn’t be happier! The guys are awesome and among the nicest people you can meet. I’ve been following SABATON since 2005 when I saw them live for the first time and I have loved the band ever since, so when they asked me to join there was no hesitation. Although, they did ask me already back in 2012 but for many personal reasons it was not a good time for me to hit the road and give everything that was needed to the band. So I declined, but we have stayed in touch since then. I also wanna say that Thobbe is a great guitarist and such a wonderful guy! My job is not to replace him, it’s to contribute to the band with my own style of guitarplaying but of course also to keep his fans happy by playing his wonderful solos with pride. I look foward to meet you all on tour and to do what I love the most in life – to play heavy metal!”

Swedish heavy metal heroes SABATON have announced, via their Official Facebook page, that their guitarist Thobbe Englund has decided to leave the band:

Our colleague and brother Thobbe Englund has decided to part ways with Sabaton.

We wish him nothing but success and good luck in the future, and we salute him for all the good years and the fantastic moments we shared both on and off the stage!

Below is Thobbe’s own words:

Dear friends!

Today I have decided to announce my leave from Sabaton.

Why? …many may ask.

– There is this thing that I truly believe in, and that is that one should always follow the heart.
I have in recent years become more aware of what would make me feel real happiness and content, and that is to expand my own creativeness in combination with a somewhat stiller life, where I will not tour all year round at the speed of light.

Unfortunately as a consequence I will not be able to meet all of you wonderful people out there, which is sad, and I´m really gonna miss you all.
But I will still be making music, of course, and as I am writing this I am making plans for the future.

During the many years of touring with Sabaton we have become like brothers.
Together with the best crew in the world we´ve had a true blast and there is a bond between all of us that cannot be broken.
Therefore I find no reason to be sentimental, because brothers and sisters are friends for life, and the future is bright!

Thobbe will do some more shows during the summer and play his final gig with Sabaton in our hometown Falun, on our own festival Sabaton Open Air, for the releaseparty of our new album The Last Stand.

After that a new guitar player will carry on.

Swedish heavy metallers SABATON have been a major force in the metal music world for the last fourteen years, delivering  their historical war themed brand of music to the fans.

Major changes were made in the SABATON camp in 2012, when four longstanding members left the band, leaving just vocalist Joakim Brodén and bass player Pär Sundström to reform with new musicians. The new line-up was announced a couple of months later and SABATON released their now platinum selling album “Carolus Rex.”

SABATON made their first appearance at this years Bloodstock Open Air Festival and prior to their show Blackdiamond caught up with both new guitarists, Chris Rörland and Thobbe Englund.

Discussing “Carolus Rex” achieving platinum status, Chris and Thobbe said:

“Nobody sells CD’s any more, especially Sweden. So, being a Swedish band selling platinum, it’s wow, mind blowing! We didn’t expect that, it went gold, then platinum. It’s kind of bizarre in a way, you can’t take it in really!”

On upcoming plans for SABATON and a new album, the guys explained:

“We have some stuff, Joakim is working on that. Later this fall all five of us will sit down and contribute some ideas. If it sounds SABATON, it’s gonna be on the album, if it doesn’t sound SABATON, it’s not gonna be on the album.

It should be released in the spring or summer next year.”
