MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist Nikki Sixx has turned 53 yesterday (Sunday, December 11).
A photo of the cake Sixx received from his bandmates and road crew while on the road in the U.K. with DEF LEPPARD and STEEL PANTHER can be seen below.
The California native was a major drug abuser during much of the band’s first decade, and was once even declared dead for two minutes after overdosing on heroin. Since getting sober, however, Sixx has continued to record and tour, written two books, taken up photography and become president of a record label. He told The Pulse of Radio that sometimes he can’t believe his current lifestyle. “It’s insane,” he said. “It’s insane. And you know what? If you manage it well, you can achieve so much on the planet, more than what I used to be able to achieve, which was, ‘Let me write ten songs, record an album and go on tour.’ That’s it. That’s all I did. That’s like, ridiculous. If all I had to do was make a MÖTLEY CRÜE album and tour, I’d feel like I was gonna slit my wrists, I’d be so bored now.”
Sixx‘s real name is Frank Carlton Serafina Feranna. He was born in San Jose and raised by his mother and grandparents after his father left the family.
After moving around several times, he struck out for Los Angeles on his own at the age of 17, first joining the band London before forming MÖTLEY CRÜE in 1981 with drummer Tommy Lee.
The band released its debut album, “Too Fast For Love”, in 1982, and scored its commercial breakthrough in 1983 with “Shout at the Devil”.
Despite other hit albums such as “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “Dr. Feelgood”, the CRÜE went through a period of uncertainty in the ’90s, with both singer Vince Neil and Lee leaving the group at different times.
The original band reunited in 2004 for a hugely successful world tour, at which point Sixx officially declared himself sober.
His darkest drug period was chronicled in a 2007 memoir, “The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star”, and the accompanying album by his side project SIXX: A.M.
Sixx has been married twice, to Playboy Playmate Brandi Brandt and actress Donna D’Errico, and has five children. He is currently dating model Courtney Bingham.
MAGENTA HARVEST, the Finnish death metal band featuring current and former members of FINNTROLL, CHTHONIAN, MYGRAIN and …AND OCEANS, will enter the studio later this month to begin recording its second demo. According to a press release, the new effort will see the group widening its soundscape with the help of Aleksi Virta of FINNTROLL, who “will create some epic keyboard stuff” to go along with the material. An early 2012 release is expected. MAGENTA HARVEST released its debut EP, “A Familiar Room”, in February. The four tracks — “Spawn Of Neglect”, “Sermon”, “Killing Sign” and “A Familiar Room” — can now be streamed below.
MAGENTA HARVEST was formed in 2005 as a two-man project featuring Timo Kontio (HAVOC UNIT, …AND OCEANS) on guitar and Janne Manninen (MYGRAIN, …AND OCEANS) on drums. In 2009, second guitarist Timo Hanhikangas (TOTAL VOMIT EXPERIENCE) and bassist Jonas Frilund (CHTHONIAN) joined the band. Another year went by before Mathias Lillmåns (FINNTROLL, CHTHONIAN) agreed to front the group.
MAGENTA HARVEST states: “[Lillmåns‘ addition to the band] was easy because we had discussed about this with Mathias already a few years earlier, but the decision wasn’t that clear at first because Mathias were quite busy with his other musical activities and we thought also that there was no need for any singer before we had the rest of band in order and also some stuff ready to work with.
“When Mathias joined the band he actually came directly to the studio. Of course he didn’t have any lyrics ready then, but luckily we got help from Jan (ex-FINNTROLL). ”

SHEAR, from Finland with their energetic, overwhelming and sometimes melancholy Metal, have conquered the heart of many people getting approvals everywhere. And today we offer a brief interview with Alexa Leroux, frontwoman of the group. Angelic face but aggressive and powerful voice.
1. Hi Alexa, I’m Sylvi. When and how did you understand that you wanted to become a singer?
Hello Sylvi! Since a very young age I was a very much into singing. I loved bands like Queen and Aerosmith. In Fact, I was specialized in singing guitar solos! And this was when I was about six years old. Then again, I loved classical music, because we listened to a lot of it at home. I loved singing along to operas and at nine years old I asked my parents to pay for lessons and that’s when I started my journey in classical music.
2. Tell me, how did you get in touch with the band, and how did you join it?
I had been looking for a band for quite a while but it seemed impossible to find a band with good players and a great sense of humor. Then suddenly I saw an add for this band called Crystal Blaze(CB) looking for a vocalist. I looked at their myspace and saw that we had some mutual friends who I had played with before, then I saw CB had played at Wacken and after listening to some demos I contacted them. We had one training session together, laughed a lot, were really in sync and that was it. I was in the band.
3. Have you ever thought to make a “solo album”?
My whole life I’ve thought of making several types of albums, solo or with a band. Probably at some point it would be cool to make a solo album if I feel that there’s a side of me that I’d like to show more and it is impossible to integrate into Shear’s music. But as of now, I’ve co-written pretty much all the songs, so I’m not limited in Shear. 4. In addition to Metal, what kind of music gender do you listen to?
I listen to a lot of different genres. I think that as a musician it is not healthy to listen only to one type of music. I admit I listen mainly to metal, but I love classic rock ‘n roll, Thin Lizzy being one of my all-time favorites. I also am very much into country rock, hip hop and pop. Apart from that I listen to a lot of classical music because of my musical background and the fact that I still practice it. Some personal favorites are Benjamin Britten, Tchaikovsky and Léo Delibes.
5. If one day you will get tired to be a Metal singer, to what kind of music gender would you approach?
Hahah, I don’t know, I don’t see that day coming very soon! Maybe I should start by making a Christmas album with a big band or something. That would be fun.
6. How do you prepare yourself psychologically before the shows?
After warming up vocally and physically I sit alone quiet for about 15 min. I go through things in my mind and just focus on the moment.
7. What inspires you to carry on with your career?
What inspires me is the fact that music is my first love and the one thing that’s always been the biggest part of my life. That’s pretty much it.
8. How has your life changed since you became SHEAR’s singer?
It hasn’t really changed that much. One of the biggest changes is probably that I just feel better about myself because I’m actually accomplishing what I want in life right now. 9. What is the most good thing and the most bad thing in your career?
The best part is when people tell you they love your songs, or when you see someone singing along at gigs, that’s probably the best. The worst thing has to be that a lot of people seem to think that life is a big music competition and I just don’t appreciate a lot of the comparisons people make. I don’t see why anyone would want to rank singers, for example. I believe there is plenty of room in this world for more singers than just one.
10. How do you take criticism?
Well, it depends. If someone tells you you’re bad, they have to be able to say specifically what in their opinion was wrong. You don’t always have to agree, but it is good to listen. Of course not all criticism is bad, but you have to take the good criticism with a pinch of salt, too. You can’t just believe anything and everything.
11. During your free time, do you meet with the other members of the band?
All the time. We are a very tight unit.
12. Thinking about your career, what is the thing that most scares you?
As a musician, probably losing my hearing is the worst nightmare. If I would for some reason lose my voice I’d still be able to make music, but not being able to hear, that would be the saddest situation.
13. How is your relationship with the fans?
I’ve mostly only spoken to people who like our music in a Finland. It’s been fun to hear what they like and how it makes them feel. It helps you look at your music from a different point of view.
14. With which artist you’d like to make a duet?
Maybe Devin Townsend. But it would also be a dream to work with Dimmu Borgir.
15. When you are at home, you listen to your band or do you prefer to listen to something else?
Mainly other stuff. Lately Dream Theater’s ‘A Dramatic Turn Of Events’.
16. Thanks Alexa for this interview. Now the last word is yours…
Thank you. I hope people like our upcoming album and make sure to get it! 🙂

The gods are clement, they offer us the Sacred Fire in the form of the first album of the Greek combative WARDRUM, who with “Spadework” and its spirited and very high progressive power metal should enchant our end of the year.
Formed by the tenacious drummer Stergios Kourou supported by invigorating singer Piero Leporale shares with us, without sentence, his wide range of vocal emotions, fumed by vindictive compositions of “serial-guitarist-killer” Kosta Vreto (Horizon’s End) and groovy bassist Kostas Scandalis, this new band qualifiers a beautiful property: Invested, angry, optimistic in its art, WARDRUM announces a future war on which to be reckoned.
The song “The Meaning Of Forever” is sufficient to understand the beauty of this art. Everything is said in the sumptuously evocative vocal lines, where you feel deeply in your flesh the underlying pain that interferes. This Heavy-Metal edge vintages (Dio, Astral Doors, or Steel Attack for example), the angry heartbreaking solos in their melodical constructions, these rhythmic escapements of an hungry Iced Earth, invite us to feast.
This glorious land where was born the best of the Human Spirit, the battered cradle by severe storms, a child has become a man who’s never relinquished and his pride will be his sword. As long as a human is capable to produce such music, hope will not die.
On the karst torment there is born a trembling silver, WARDRUM with this offering honors twelve Olympians deities and thus becomes immortal among the Immortals, like the enlighted SepticFlesh, Nightfall, Firewind and Rotting Christ. Many were the times when I hammered the fact, but the future of Metal is apparent in the Greek skies. WARDRUM is again a brillant proof of it. Listen to the words of Henry Miller: “In Greece, we have a desire to swim in the sky.”
WARDRUM: let’s celebrate the vital breath of Heavy-Metal at the top of his art!
METALLICA performed a previously unreleased song from the “Death Magnetic” sessions called “Rebel Of Babylon” last night (Saturday, December 10) at the fourth and final intimate show at the Fillmore in San Francisco as part of the week-long celebration of its 30th anniversary as a band for fan club members only.
A rough-mix version of the studio recording of “Rebel Of Babylon” has since been e-mailed to members of METALLICA‘s official fan club and can now be streamed in the YouTube clip below.
Commented the band: “We’re pretty excited to be bringing these songs back to life nearly four years after they were recorded. Once again, this is the unpolished version of the song… the original rough mix from March of 2008 in its rawest, untouched form.”
“Rebel Of Babylon” lyrics:
Rebel grip your bottle tight
Just float away
Rebel is it hard to leave
What makes you stay?
Go take your poison ink
Sign life away
Then take your dirty spoon
And dig your grave
Dig your grave
Rebel grips the bottle tight
Just floats away
Rebel finds it hard to leave
What makes you stay?
He takes the poison ink
Signing life away
Then takes the dirty spoon
And digs his grave
Let this dark shine
Let this dark shine
Let it shine bright
Don’t let it burn out tonight
Kill me one more time
Stigmata
Kill me one more time
Neo martyr
Gonna die young
Gonna live forever
Kill me one more time
Rise up
Rebel of Babylon
Renegade fights the fight
That no one wins
He claims a crown of thorns
To pierce the skin
He climbs his crucifix
And waits for dawn
Thinks they’ll remember him
After he’s gone
Let this dark shine
Let this dark shine
Let it shine bright
Don’t let it burn out tonight
Kill me one more time
Stigmata
Kill me one more time
Neo martyr
Gonna die young
Gonna live forever
Kill me one more time
Rise up
Rebel of Babylon
Rise up
Rise up
Resurrection
The rebel fights the fight
That no one wins
To claim a crown of thorns
To pierce his skin
Climbs his crucifix
And waits for dawn
He looses consciousness
The myth lives on
Let this dark shine
Let this dark shine
Let it shine bright
Don’t let it burn out tonight
Tonight
Kill me one more time
Stigmata
Kill me one more time
Neo martyr
Gonna die young
Gonna live forever
Kill me one more time
Rise up
Rebel of Babylon
Rise up
Rise up
Resurrection (End of lyrics)
METALLICA earlier in the week made available three other previously unreleased songs from the “Death Magnetic” sessions called “Hate Train”, “Just A Bullet Away” and “Hell And Back” after first performing them live on Monday, December 5, Wednesday, December 7 and Friday, December 9, respectively, at the Fillmore in San Francisco.
“Death Magnetic” was officially certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on June 28, 2010 for shipments in the United States in excess of two million copies.
METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio in an October 2008 interview that he didn’t understand the controversy that had broken out over the audio quality of “Death Magnetic” shortly after the LP’s release. Some fans and publications had accused the group and producer Rick Rubin of mixing the album at such a loud volume that the music is distorted and difficult to listen to. But Ulrich said that he’s more than happy with the way it turned out. “I listen to this record, and I listen to it every couple of days,” he said. “And when I hear it, it puts a smile on my face and it blows me away, and I don’t understand what people are talking about. Somebody told me the other day that there were 12,000 people that had signed a petition to remix the record. We’ve sold two and a half million copies [worldwide] of ‘Death Magnetic’. You do the math yourself.”
A number of fans said online that they prefer the versions of the CD’s tracks prepared for the Guitar Hero video game, which are mixed differently.
Ted Jensen, the engineer who mastered the album at Sterling Sound in New York, responded to fan complaints that the CD is too loud and the audio is pushed to distortion levels by writing, “I’m certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick-walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here. Believe me, I’m not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else.”
Mastering is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device, the “master,” from which all copies will be produced.
Blame for the sound quality has been laid at the feet of the band itself, producer Rick Rubin and his recording engineer, Greg Fidelman. Source: Blabbermouth.net
