When New Jersey metal icon Dan Lorenzo (Hades, Non Fiction, among others) and Type O Negative + ex-Danzig drummer Johnny Kelly join forces to launch a joint project PATRIARCHS IN BLACK, you can already guess that something great is about to happen.

The first single Demon of Regret  features Kelly, Lorenzo, Karl Agell on vocals and Dave Neabore ( Dog Eat Dog) on bass.Demon Of Regret is the very first song Lorenzo and Agell ever wrote together. Lorenzo wrote the music. Lyrically Agell said the track is “About choices made and paths not taken, and our inability to go back no matter how much we wish we could. Consequences. Guilt. Anguish.”

Brooklyn native Johnny Kelly and NJ guitarist Dan Lorenzo have both played in more than a handful of bands. Lorenzo was the founding member of both Hades and Non-Fiction and most recently Vessel Of Light and Cassius King. He even wrote the music with Bobby Blitz‘ first foray outside of Overkill in 2007 withThe Cursed. Kelly first came into prominence with Type O Negative and has also sat behind the kit for Danzig for nearly two decades. Kelly has also performed with BlackLabel Society, A Pale Horse Name Death, and currently Quiet Riot and Silvertomb. Before now the two have never recorded anything together.

“I honestly don’t remember how I first got in contact with Johnny”, Lorenzo stated. “I know we’ve had some email contact together for a while, and I remember originally being flattered that Johnny even know who I was.” Kelly stated, “I liked the riffs that Dan sent me and it’s a great opportunity to get to play with different people.” When Kelly was asked what he brings to the table for Patriarch In Black he came back with, “I’m not really sure.  I consider myself to be an average drummer at best.  It must be my harming personality!”

The duo have named this project PATRIARCHS IN BLACK. Lorenzo wrote the music and plays guitar, Kelly is behind the kit.

PATRIARCHS IN BLACK will have multiple vocalists. Karl Agell ( former COC) , Dewey Bragg ( Kill Devil Hill)  Rob Dukes ( former Exodus), Rob Traynor ( Black Water Rising)  and John Kosco  ( Dropbox) have each already agreed to sing at least one song.

When pressed for a description of how the music sounds Kelly said, “All roads lead to Black Sabbath!”.

PATRIARCHS IN BLACK will release their upcoming album next year via MDD. Be prepared, more info soon!

The band comments:

“Get Rid Of is some kind of a battle cry – who the enemy is, is up to you! We wanted this song to be a fast and heavy opener with a sad vibe that turns into a desire for freedom.

Shade Without Color is the follow-up for our 2020 album Shape Without Form. The majority of the songs were written at the same time, and we intented it to be a sort of a „double-album”, in which the two would come out at different times. Both titles come from T.S. Eliot’s poem The Hollow Men and both albums mostly deal with the subject of emptiness, the process of becoming empty – only to an extent which suits an instrumental material, of course.

The basis of thought behind the album is not the actual state of emptiness, it’s rather the things leading up to it – like personal fate, tragedy and weakness; the subject of authority; technology becoming impersonal; politics, alienated people; the feeling of being threatened.

This emptiness uniformizes, dissolves the individual, leaves humankind disenchanted and hopeless.

We look at both records as an illustration of this theme, this is mostly why we use (again) quotes from movies, interviews, speeches or poems. Our own thoughts and feelings are encapsulated within these and of course, within the music surrounding it. We also attempted though to resolve this mostly dark subject, as we do not believe that mankind’s fate generally would be hopeless and that there would be no way out. Darker parts lead to moments filled with more hope, while in the melodies and themes intented to be more beautiful and soft have a recurring dissonance, indicating this constant battle.

It because of this fact that we would omit writing in too much detail about every song, we believe a matching or an actually used quote should be enough to set the mood and give some ground to the concept behind the song.”

“People become attached to their burdens sometimes more than the burdens are attached to them.” –George Bernard Shaw

Recorded in Los Angeles in the winter of 2021 , the new album promises to deliver the bands signature rock and roll sound and spirit that first put Cruzados on the map some 30 years ago. The band’s new lineup features Cruzados co-founder bassist/songwriter Tony Marsico, vocalist Ron Young (Little Caesar), guitarist Loren Molinare (The Dogs),  guitarist Mark Tremalgia and drummer Rob Klonel.  The album includes guests performances by John Doe (X),  Dave Alvin (The Blasters), David Hildago and Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Gia Ciambotti (Bruce Springsteen) , Melanie Vammen (The Muffs,The Pandoras), Greg Kuehn (TSOL), Jimmy Z (Rod Stewart), Buck Johnson (Aerosmith), among others.

Signed by record executive Clive Davis, Cruzados released their debut album “Cruzados” (1985) and “After Dark”(1987) on Arista Records spawning the singles and videos “Motorcycle Girl” and “Bed of Lies” which quickly became MTV favorites and chart toppers, with the latter single reaching the #4 position on the Billboard chart in 1987. The Cruzados original songs and fan favorites in their live shows would eventually find their way into blockbuster motion pictures such as Roadhouse, From Dusk Till Dawn, Desperado, Gun Men,  and more. The Cruzados would appear as themselves in the hit motion picture Roadhouse as well.

Cruzados hit the road hard  touring worldwide between the years of 1985 and 1989 performing at every dive bar and over the top stadium show in it’s path. The band shared the bill with a wide variety of diverse groups such as Fleetwood Mac, Joe Walsh, Billy Idol, Warren Zevon, Stevie Wonder, INXS, Joe Cocker to REM and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. After two albums and endless tours the band called it quits.

Front man/vocalist Tito Larriva would go on to form his own band “Tito and Tarantula” where original Cruzados guitarist Steve Hufsteter would join him as part of his touring band. Cruzados drummer Chalo Quintana would go on to tour with Bob Dylan, Social Distortion,  and Izzy Stradlin. Cruzados guitarist Marshall Rohner would also Join TSOL. Bassist Tony Marsico would go on to play with Tito and Tarantula, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Roger Daltrey, and Marianne Faithfull.

This album is dedicated to the memory of our fallen Cruzados brothers Chalo Quintana and Marshall Rohner, whom without them Cruzados would not exist. Their spirit and dedication to rock and roll will live on forever in the music that they helped to create.

CRUZADOS:
Cruzados co-founder bassist/songwriter Tony Marsico, vocalist Ron Young (Little Caesar), guitarist Loren Molinare (The Dogs),  guitarist Mark Tremalgia, drummer Rob Klonel

OH HIROSHIMA Announce New Album + Unveil Epic New Track ‘Humane’

Following their latest magnum opus, Oscillation (2019), Swedish post-rock masters OH HIROSHIMA have returned with their fourth studio album, Myriad, slated for release on March 4, 2022 via Napalm Records. Due to pandemic lockdowns, the band channeled all of their time and creativity into delivering an epic successor, unquestionably raising the bar and excelling with grandeur!

It’s a mixture of emotions – from infinite sadness to moments of clarity and heart-rending melodies blending into a rumbling volcano of aesthetic noise and ferocious power, but also the unique use of trumpets, cello and trombones throughout – that sees OH HIROSHIMA outclass and grow renowned not only in post-rock circles, but beyond. In comparison to previous works, the band incorporates more influences from various genres, causing each track to stand out from the next. This phenomenon is perfectly emphasized on the beautifully crafted first single “Humane”. Building into a mesmerizing aura, the track explodes into a sonic ascension of grace and breathtaking power!

Band mastermind Jakob Hemström says:
“‘Humane’ might be the most direct and intense song we’ve created as a band. For us it marks a somewhat new direction that we wanted to explore and we’re very proud of how it turned out. We felt right away that this was the first song of the new album we wanted our listeners to hear. The lyrics revolve around themes of human hubris and the video was filmed, directed and edited by our drummer, Oskar.”

Upon becoming a duo due to former bassist Simon Forsberg departing the band in early 2021, OH HIROSHIMA were provided a challenging chance to step up their songwriting game. There is still a hefty dose of post-rock to be heard on Myriad, but brothers Jakob Hemström and Oskar Nilsson managed to kick down the creative walls of the band, making use of a much broader musical palette.

Recorded by Kristian Karlsson (pg.lost, Cult Of Luna), and once again mixed and mastered by Cult Of Luna’s Magnus Lindberg, with Myriad, OH HIROSHIMA demonstrate outstanding ability – melding captivating melody with epic, fulminating fervency, and delivering a majestic masterpiece that will undoubtedly be an early album of the year contender!

Myriad Tracklist:

  1. Nour
  2. Veil of Certainty
  3. All Things Pass

Theatrical Metal Opera DIAMORTE Release Video for New Single ‘Where The Light Grows Cold’

Theatrical metal opera production DIAMORTE have released the video for their new single “Where The Light Grows Cold.” Drake Mefestta talking about the new single, “We can’t wait for you to hear this absolute BEHEMOTH of a track featuring the Budapest Scoring Orchestra and the international cast of DiAmorte. Trust us when we say you’ve never heard something quite like this before, and that’s a promise.”

The talent involved in creating the song and video is amazing. Drake Mefestta discusses what it was like working with all the talent on this song, “A book unto itself is required to give the worthy amount of praise to each talent that bled themselves into this. This song journeyed around the world both in music as well video alike. Regardless of future accolades DiAmorte may achieve, still I see myself as a black-clad teenager with a stock keyboard and rather insane dream. To then presently work directly with individuals I once listened to and previously inspired by in younger years is a joy without measure. I myself, am nothing more that part of something far greater than myself, collectively carried by those I’m privileged to call colleges and even more-so, friends and family. All the imagination means little if a skillful hand cannot articulate and translate. It is my hope the music will speak to the talent and collective efforts more vividly than anything I can produce. For all those that contributed towards this mad endeavor, thank you for making a fool’s dream a worthwhile reality.”

DiAmorte has caught the eye of Blackie Lawless, legendary founder and lead singer of W.A.S.P., “This is seriously impressive. There’s a ton of eye candy. The guy’s in it have star power.”

DiAmorte is
Drake Mefestta – Lacroix, Guttural Vocalist
