AVAST: Release New Album Details & New Single

Skillfully fusing the aesthetics of black metal with the atmospherics of post-rock in order to create a soundscape that is both breathtaking and mesmerizing, Norwegian blackgazers AVAST are set to release their debut full-length album “Mother Culture” on October 26th through Dark Essence Records.

As a prelude to the release of “Mother Culture”, Dark Essence Records has released the title track as a single, which is available from and can be heard at https://avastband.bandcamp.com/track/mother-culture.

Hailing from Stavanger, Norway, AVAST consists of Hans Olaf Myrvang (AGENDA) on bass and vocals, Trond Salte (AGENDA),  Ørjan Lund (NAG) on guitars, and Stian Steensnæs (LIK) on drums, AVAST is a band that reviewers and promoters place in a variety of genres. Whilst the band’s roots lie in punk rock and hardcore, it would be safe to say that blackgaze and post-black metal are genres that could be applied to AVAST, given that AVAST’s lyrical themes are not centered around the usual black metal topics, but tend more towards a philosophical and poetical take on social and environmental issues.

The members of AVAST themselves describe “Mother Culture” as “a concept album that examines the myths upon which modern civilization is based”, and “an apocalyptic tale about the rise and fall of human civilization, and how we have exploited the Earth’s resources to such a degree that we are now standing on the brink of our own extinction. Musically the record borrows equally from the black metal and post-rock genres, and lyrically it draws inspiration from Daniel Quinn’s philosophical novel Ishmael.”

Dark Essence Records Ink Deal With MADDER MORTEM, To Release New Album

Dark Essence Records have today announced that they have added Norwegian Alternative Metallers MADDER MORTEM to their roster.  The label is set to release the band’s sixth full length album, titled “Red In Tooth And Claw”, later this year, on a date as yet to be announced.  As a taste of what fans can expect, MADDER MORTEM have put together a teaser of some of the songs from “Red In Tooth And Claw”, which can be heard at this location.

Formed in 1993, originally under the name of Mystery Tribe, MADDER MORTEM‘s music, with its hauntingly beautiful vocals by Agnete M. Kirkevaag,  is atmospheric and melodic, with a very definite progressive leaning, but at the same time the band can show an underlying aggression that gives their sound a harder, more driven edge than one might expect.  Aside from Agnete, MADDER MORTEM‘s five-member lineup includes BP. M. Kirkevaag on guitar & vocals, Richard Wikstrand on guitars, Tormod L. Moseng on bass and Mads Solås on drums.

LUCIFER’S CHILD: Debut New Video ‘Lucifer’s Child’

With a release date of the 25th September for “The Wiccan”, the debut full-length album from LUCIFER’s CHILD, the project of George Emmanuel (ROTTING CHRIST, ex-CHAOSTAR) and Stathis Ridis (NIGHTFALL), a video for the track ‘Lucifer’s Child’ has debuted today on Metal Hammer UK. The video was directed and produced by the band and can be seen at this location.

Basing their sound on classic Greek Black Metal, Emmanuel (guitars) and Stathis (bass), together with Marios Dupont on vocals and Nick Vell on drums, have created a band that performs music that has been created with the intention of serving as an introduction to the atmosphere surrounding the act of “Summoning”. With a sound that ranges from the heavier end of the musical spectrum to mid-paced, the intention is to create a unity between the spiritual ideas expressed within each song and the music itself, thereby not only giving the listener an insight into how electrifying Black Metal can sound, but also a sense of spiritualistic energy.

ORKAN: Details Of New Album “Livlaus” Revealed

With a release date set for the 11th September, Dark Essence Records have revealed details for the upcoming sophomore full-length album from Norwegian Black Metallers ORKAN. Titled “Livlaus”, the seven-track album was recorded live in the studio, with no editing of the basic tracks, whilst vocals and effects were added later. Hoest (TAAKE) and V’gandr (HELHEIM) perform guest vocals on two of the tracks.

“Livlaus” promises to be an uncompromising album, whose Black Metal influenced sound features elements from Thrash and other Extreme genres, and creates atmospheric melodies with haunting vocals and intense blastbeats. With Norwegian lyrics, the whole album is loosely based on the concept of a lost soul trying to find peace in the Kingdom of the Dead, and was inspired by the forests and old sulphur mines in the area around drummer Rune Nesse’s hometown of Stord, on the west coast of Norway.

ORKAN‘s four-man lineup was formed in 2008 by TAAKE‘s live guitarist Gjermund Fredheim and ex- BYFROST drummer Rune Nesse, who were joined by former GRIMNORTH bassist Sindre Hillesdal and frontman Einar Fjelldal (ex-GRAVEMACHINE) to complete the line-up. ORKAN’s debut full-length album “Crimson Canvas”, which the band themselves describe as a ” self-financed, thrashy album” appeared in 2012, and is far removed from the much darker direction taken on “Livlaus”.

ALFAHANNE And Dark Essence Records Announce Competition In Run-Up To Album Release

When details of ALFAHANNE‘s debut full-length album “Alfapokalyps” were revealed prior to the album’s release on Dark Essence Records early last year, many were surprised to find that the Swedish band, who at that time were relatively unknown,  had managed to attract guest appearances from artists such as TAAKE’s Hoest, SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth, and HELHEIM’s V’gandr.    But ALFAHANNE can claim a  lineup of musicians that have been on the Black Metal scene since the early ’90’s in bands such as VINTERLAND and early MAZE OF TORMENT , and their reputation for high octane live shows and their self-styled Alfapokalyptic Rock, which is a high energy mix of Black Metal, Classic Rock and Punk,  has since garnered them a legion of new fans throughout the world and proved to be more than enough to win the respect of other established musicians.

So much so, in fact, that the band’s sophomore full-length album, which is scheduled for release in September of this year, will include four special guests, and,  in keeping with the band’s policy of being accessible to their fans through Social Media, ALFAHANNE  have teamed up with DARK ESSENCE RECORDS to run a competition in the run-up to the release of the album.

“We really enjoy interacting with our fans, so we thought it would be fun to get them involved in guessing who the guests on our new album will be”, commented the band.  “Over the next weeks we will be featuring one of the guests and giving you a series of clues as to who it is.  Each guest is a stand-alone entry to the competition, so you have four chances of winning. The winners will receive a copy of our new album the minute it’s released, courtesy of Dark Essence Records!  Here are the clues to the first guest.  We thought we’d start off with a very easy one”. 

1) This guest has a history of collaborations with Alfahanne, both in the studio and live.

2)  This guest started his current band whilst not yet a teenager  and it has been going for almost 20 years

3)  This guest is credited with starting the genre that many call “Suicidal”

4)  This guest’s  band and Alfahanne will both be appearing at Incineration Festival in London on the 9th May

Bergen-based Dark Essence Records, one of the fastest growing and most respected Norwegian labels,  have announced the signing of Black Metallers ORKAN, and are set to release the band’s sophomore full-length album “Livlaus” later this year.

ORKAN’s four-man lineup, all of whom also play in ENCHANTING DARKNESS, was formed in 2008 by TAAKE’s live guitarist Gjermund Fredheim and ex- BYFROST drummer Rune Ness.  Having been joined by former GRIMNORTH  bassist Sindre Hillesdal and frontman Einar Fjelldal (ex-GRAVEMACHINE),  ORKAN released their debut full-length album “Crimson Canvas” in 2012.

Whilst “Crimson Fields” is, as described by the band, “a self-financed, thrashy album”, ORKAN have left this sound behind them and taken their musical vision in a much darker direction, taking the classic Norwegian Black Metal sound and incorporating into it influences from many other genres, to create atmospheric melodies with haunting vocals and intense blastbeats.
