BLACK featuring – former BLACK SABBATH singer Tony Martin, ex-HAMMERFALL bassist Magnus Rosén and KING DIAMOND guitarist Andy LaRocque and drummer Danny Needham (VENOM) – are currently mixing material for their debut album at LaRocque’s Sonic Train Studios in Varberg, Sweden. Check out the new band logo below:
Rosén checks in with BraveWords.com: “We are mixing the first songs with Black, then we will look for a recording deal. We have a few labels interested right now, but we are making sure that we find someone that can work with us for a long time. This is not a project, this is a band. So we hope we are on the road some time next year if all goes well.”
Ultimate-Guitar.com recently invited their readers to nominate their favourite bassline ever for a Top 10 poll: Hundreds took part, resulting in what has been dubbed “a definitive list of awesome riffs.”
An excerpt from that list is available below:
5. METALLICA – ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’
“Cliff Burton, yet another brilliant bassist who was taken before his time. People used to mistake this opening sound for a guitar, but instead it was Burton’s bass running though distortion and a wah-pedal. He actually wrote the riff before joining Metallica, and first aired it during a 12-minute jam at a battle of the bands competition in 1979.”
4. BLACK SABBATH – ‘N.I.B.’
“It seems UG readers love a bit of wah on bass! This time it’s from Geezer Butler, who recorded his part in one legendary take. Geezer says he named the song after drummer Bill Ward’s beard, which makes so little sense that some Americans decided to rename it ‘Naivety In Black'”.
3. QUEEN – “Another One Bites The Dust”
Bassist John Deacon was perhaps the most mild-mannered member of Queen, but he was a creative powerhouse. He wrote some of the best-selling Queen singles, including this one which shifted over 7 million copies.
2. MEGADETH – “Peace Sells …”
It’s easy to let frontman Dave Mustaine and his controversial comments overshadow the awesomeness of Megadeth. Thanks to bassist Dave Ellefson, this song was pretty close to winning our award for ‘best baseline ever’ and missed out by only four votes.
1. PINK FLOYD – “Money”
Who would have guessed! All of us, obviously. Never has a 7/8 riff sounded so effortless and groovy. It could have sounded quite different – Roger Waters originally demoed this song in G-sharp minor, but it was eventually recorded in B minor. Either way, the result was one of the all-time great basslines, and today it’s your winner. Enjoy!
According to InGoal Magazine, Massachusetts recreational hockey goaltender Liz Conner has had a BLACK SABBATH-themed goalie mask created by Headstrong Grafx.
”I asked specifically for the picture of Henry (the flying devil logo) on the forehead, based on alternative CD art for ‘The Devil You Know’ and the band name on the chin,” Liz said. “My only other stipulation was that the mask not focus 100% on Ozzy. Tony Iommi‘s riffs are what drew me to SABBATH, and I wanted to make sure he was included somewhere. The rest was all Headstrong.”
As previously reported, backup goaltender Chris Mason of the NHL hockey team Nashville Predators recently debuted his new mask, featuring a tribute to British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN in the shape of the band’s mascot Eddie.
The design in question utilizes Eddie from the Egyptian-themed cover of MAIDEN‘s “Powerslave” album, which also produced the single “Aces High” and corresponding Eddie included on Mason‘s 2011 Winnipeg Jets mask. Both covers were originally created originally by artist Derek Riggs, who inspired the mask’s artist, Steve Nash of EyeCandyAir.
DEEP PURPLE‘s Ian Gillan and BLACK SABBATH‘s Tony Iommi took everybody by surprise in 2011 by releasing a charity single: ‘Out Of My Mind’, renewing the collaboration that led the pair recording the Black Sabbath album Born Again in 1984. None other than Jason Newsted (METALLICA), Jon Lord (ex-Deep Purple), Nicko McBrain (IRON MAIDEN) and Linde Lindström (H.I.M.) supported the two rock legends.
Not only jamming together for the shear fun of things, this new project has united for a cause – rebuilding and helping the music school in Gyumari, Armenia. The single was a joyful and inspired moment. Iommi and Gillan then decided to make WhoCares an album for their devoted fans. Classic songs and a lot of rarities and unreleased material in two-CDs of fantastic rare music. This is much more than a Gillan solo album or a Deep Purple anthology – this is a real collector’s item and must have for every Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi fan.
The album was released in Europe on July 13th, and will now be available in North America on August 28th.

Three-quarters of the original BLACK SABBATH lineup performed on August 3 as the headliner of this year’s edition of the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, with founding drummer Bill Ward sitting out the reunion due to a contract dispute. His fill-in was Ozzy Osbourne touring drummer Tommy Clufetos.
This was SABBATH‘s only North American performance of 2012 as guitarist Tony Iommi continues his treatment for cancer. The rest of the scheduled SABBATH tour dates were played by Ozzy Osbourne and billed as “Ozzy & Friends.”
BLACK SABBATH‘s Lollapalooza setlist was as follows:
01. Black Sabbath
02. The Wizard
03. Beyond The Wall Of Sleep
04. N.I.B.
05. Into The Void
06. Under The Sun
07. Snow Blind
08. War Pigs
09. Electric Funeral
10. Sweet Leaf
11. Symptom Of The Universe / Drum Solo
12. Iron Man
13. Fairies Wear Boots
14. Dirty Women
15. Children Of The Grave
Encore
16. Paranoid
Fan-filmed video footage of BLACK SABBATH‘s entire Lollapalooza performance can be seen below.
Ward in May announced again that he was declining to join his former bandmates for its scheduled 2012 dates, as well as the recording of a new album, due to a contractual dispute.
He also allegedly had his lawyers direct SABBATH to remove him from photos of the band posted at the official BLACK SABBATH web site “so as to not give the public the wrong impression about his involvement in the current BLACK SABBATH lineup,” according to a statement issued by the band’s publicist.
Bassist Geezer Butler issued a lengthy retort at his own web site, writing that Ward “hadn’t told any one of us he was having contractual problems, and frankly those things are worked out between our representatives, and never between the four of us, let alone in public.”
Until now, Iommi told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that the members of SABBATH stayed friendly even when there were legal or other issues going on. “We’ve always been talking. We’ve always been in touch with each other,” he said. “There might be a lawsuit in the thing between us, but we still talk to each other like nothing’s happened, you know.”
Ozzy, Iommi and Butler are working on their first new album together in 33 years.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a 39-year-old woman suffered a severe cervical neck sprain after hundreds of gate-crashers rushed the fence at Lollapalooza Friday afternoon (August 3), just hours before BLACK SABBATH took the stage in Chicago’s Grant Park.
Cindy Glaser and her husband — who counts SABBATH as his “favorite band of all time” — were injured at around 5:30 p.m. Friday while they were sitting on a grove just east of the Bud Light main stage.
“They knocked the fence over. I heard the crash. The kids started running. And we were hit from behind. A kid bent me in half. His head hit my husband’s head and he hit me in the back of the neck and bent my head forward. I couldn’t see anything until the kids hit us,” Glaser told the Chicago Sun-Times.
“One of the kids who fell over us laid there and tried to get off. By then, police came and peeled him off and put handcuffs on him. Some people said it was about 50. Police were only able to catch three of them.”
Despite Lollapalooza‘s first-ever suspension and evacuation due to inclement weather, the 2012 festival drew a staggering 270,000 fans to a jam-packed Grant Park this weekend.
Lollapalooza was suspended for several hours on Saturday (August 4) and the festival grounds were evacuated due to warnings that a severe thunderstorm was going to hit the area. Every stage was shut down at 3:30 p.m. CT, with concertgoers cleared from the park and sent into three shelters set up underground in the surrounding streets. The storm, reported to have caused heavy damage west of Chicago, included hail, heavy rain, lightning and wind gusts up to 75 mph.
Lollapalooza was SABBATH‘s only North American performance of 2012 as guitarist Tony Iommi continues his treatment for cancer. The rest of the scheduled SABBATH tour dates were played by Ozzy Osbourne and billed as “Ozzy & Friends.”
