Dutch Death Thrash Legends LEGION OF THE DAMNED to Release New Album “The Poison Chalice” on May 26th

The LEGION slays again! Dutch thrash veterans LEGION OF THE DAMNED have once again entered into an alliance with the devouring depths of black and death metal and unleash another angry beast, The Poison Chalice, on May 26, 2023 via Napalm Records. The shredding monster delivers the most delicious pitch-black brew and tortures dark souls into demonic underworlds!

Today, LEGION OF THE DAMNED unleashed the first single and video “Beheading of the Godhead”. The intense and impressive official music video was crafted by renowned video production company Grupa 13 and stands out as one of the best videos of their career. The song takes the listener directly into the mind of a demonic magician that collects mankind’s deepest fears and places itself on the same sphere as God.

Founded in 1990 as Occult, the thrash machine around founding members Maurice Swinkels and Erik Fleuren was reborn as LEGION OF THE DAMNED in 2005. On The Poison Chalice, the band unites with Fabian Verweij as second guitarist besides Twan van Geel and hails together with bassist Harold Gielen performing as a five piece for the first time ever on a studio album.

Conquering the European charts for decades, the LEGION crowned itself at #17 in the Official German Album Charts with predecessor Slaves Of The Shadow Realms (2019). For almost 35 years, they have formed their aggressive signature sound from the most horrific ingredients of thrash and death metal, combined with brutal blackened influences, resulting in one of the most defined and unique sounds in the scene.

The Poison Chalice comes to life by spreading its eerily beautiful wings within the first few seconds, then dives headfirst into a hellishly furious storm before the second song “Contamination” absolutely kills. In classic LEGION OF THE DAMNED manner, there is no escape as the track relentlessly drives into the abyss.

The album spreads brutal and ice cold thrash soundscapes through relentless attacking drums and incredible guitar harmonies from both lead guitarists, underlined by angry bass lines. Infectious thrash treasures such as “Progressive Destructor”, and the almost seven-minute berserk “Behold The Beyond” break necks with hammering guitar riffs and bloody double bass infernos. “Beheading of The Godhead” delivers what the song title promises, before the past 48 minutes of hate closes with a final deep gulp from “The Poison Chalice” – leaving no one behind.

Together with producer Erwin Hermsen, the band has closed the gates of the underworld in Toneshed Studio and demonstrates that they remain the unchallenged masters of brute and unrelenting death-thrash metal in 2023!

“Next to “Dark Coronation”, “Palace of Sin” and “Warhounds of Hades”, this is one of my favorite tracks on the album: “Slaves of the Southern Cross”, its heavy as hell and sometimes reminds me of Infernal Majesty, it has a great atmosphere and I cannot wait for the fans to sheer with me “Slaves of the Southern Cross”. For the video we rented the big hall of the Turbinenhalle in Oberhausen and kept it relative ‘simple’, spend the entire day in fire blasters and filmed the band that captures the essence of LEGION OF THE DAMNED: Aggressive and heavy!”

On January 4th 2019 the quartet will release their new album Slaves of the Shadow Realm via Napalm Records. This monster resembles a colossal, smooth and blackened monolith. Five years after the much-praised Ravenous Plague, the shredding legion returns with producer Andy Classen and presents an album that merges the unadulterated fury of the early LOTD years with the sophistication of a veteran band.

GMM 2014 Crew has announced, via the Official Website, the first 51 bands for Graspop Metal Meeting 2014:

Graspop Metal Meeting 2014 is still 204 days away but already it’s looking to be a vintage edition! For one thing, 2014 will go down in GMM history as the year we were finally able to realise our plans for a second main stage! Sitting shoulder to shoulder, main stage 1 and main stage 2 will feature the top bands and household names in our GMM2014 lineup. The Marquee and the Metal Dome create a more intimate setting and we’re also erecting an open air stage in the Metal Plaza where fresh metal talent can earn their GMM spurs.

A second main stage means even more metal fun. Our 2014 lineup will feature more than 100 bands on five stages and today we’re proud to reveal the first 51 names for next summer.

The living legends from BLACK SABBATH need no introduction. Two years ago, unforeseen circumstances forced them to cancel but this year they’re back to reclaim their rightful GMM throne. Black Sabbath will close the festival on Sunday 29th June. These guys are widely hailed as the pioneers of a musical genre that has stood the test of time and is still immensely popular after more than 40 years. Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and figurehead Ozzy Osbourne have finally buried the hatchet and the renewed collaboration with the craziest frontman in metal resulted in ‘13’, one of the best and most surprising comeback albums of the year. The album marks the triumphant return to form of the band responsible for countless classics such as ‘N.I.B.’, War Pigs’, ‘Iron Man’ and of course the inevitable ‘Paranoid’.

Five years ago VOLBEAT played in the Marquee, two years later they rocked the main stage and this year they’re coming back as (one of) the biggest European rock-’n-roll/heavy metal band(s) to headline Main Stage 1 on Saturday 28 June. Their Johnny Cash-inspired music has brought them to the world’s biggest stages and their music even appeals to a mainstream audience. Just five albums into their stellar career Volbeat are on top of the world. Perhaps things are going a bit too fast? Well, hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide can tell you the answer to that one. So roll up your sleeves and warm up those vocal chords because the guitar gangsters are coming home to Graspop Metal Meeting!

AVENGED SEVENFOLD may well turn out to be the youngest ever headliners on Graspop Metal Meeting. With two previous GMM appearances under their belt they’ve really hit the jackpot this time because they get to close Main Stage 1 on Friday 27th June. Their previous European tour in late 2013 made it obvious that Avenged Sevenfold, or A7X for short, are among the top dogs of the new metal generation.

SABATON have also proven on numerous occasions that the main stage is their natural habitat. Joakim Brodén’s power metal quintet will once again transform the Dessel plains into a no man’s land to rival the Westhoek. The Swedes recently released their ‘Swedish Empire Live’ DVD and the same boundless energy captured on that live recording will result in another GMM victory next summer. Only singer Brodén and bassist Sundström remain of the previous lineup, but the new Sabaton lineup has meanwhile matured into a well-oiled machine and is ready for yet another Primo Victoria!

According to Metal Blade Records,  American Thrash legends FLOTSAM AND JETSAM will be heading over to Europe in February to support SEPULTURA and LEGION OF THE DAMNED!

Ugly Noise is the band’s eleventh full-length album, their first release on Metal Blade since 2001, and the follow up to their 2010 album, The Cold. The record also heralds the return of original members Michael Gilbert on guitar and Kelly David Smith on drums, who haven’t recorded with Flotsam and Jetsam since High in 1997. SEPULTURA‘s new album, “The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart”, will be released on October 25 via Nuclear Blast Records. The artwork for the CD was created by Brazilian artist Alexandre Wagner, who specializes in charcoal drawing techniques.

Although it was inspired by Fritz Lang‘s classic 1927 movie “Metropolis”, the CD, “The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart” is not a concept album or a soundtrack like its precedessors “Dante XXI” (based on “The Divine Comedy”) and “A-Lex” (based on “A Clockwork Orange”).

“The Mediator Between The Head And Hands Must Be The Heart” was tracked over a 40-day period at producer Ross Robinson‘s (KORN, LIMP BIZKIT, SLIPKNOT) studio in Venice, California and is being mixed and mastered by co-producer Steve Evetts, who previously worked with SEPULTURA on the “Nation” (2001), “Revolusongs” (2002) and “Roorback” (2003) albums, in addition to having collaborated with Ross on a number of other projects in the past.

SEPULTURA recorded a total of 14 songs for the follow-up to 2011’s “Kairos”, including a cover version of DEATH‘s “Zombie Ritual”. The CD will also feature a guest appearance by former SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo.

SEPULTURA‘s upcoming CD will mark the first time the band will have recorded an album outside Brazil since “Against”.

The reunion between SEPULTURA and Robinson was first suggested by Monte Conner, the former Roadrunner Records A&R chief who is now the head of Nuclear Blast Entertainment, a U.S. partnership with Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger.

Robinson produced SEPULTURA‘s classic “Roots” album in 1995. Released in February 1996 by Roadrunner, it was the band’s last studio album to feature founding member and vocalist Max Cavalera.
